Rochelle Freeman, MA, MFT & Alissa Hirshfeld- Flores, MA, MFT ~ 6 Hrs
San Francisco ~ Saturday, November 8, 2008, 9am-4pm Rochelle Freeman, MA, MFT is a Bereavement Counselor at Hospice by the Bay, and has a private practice in Sonoma. Alissa Hirshfeld - Flores, MA, MFT is a former Bereavement Services Manager of Hospice by the Bay, currently practicing in Santa Rosa, specializing in grief and loss and currently leading a neonatal loss support group. This course offers a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of working with grief and loss with adults and children in a clinical setting. The course reviews the development of theory in this field and several current models of grief and loss will be presented. Distinction will be made between normal and complicated grief reactions, and examples of and approaches to each will be presented. The differences and similarities between working with grief as opposed to other issues in therapy will be discussed. The normal developmental responses in children will be presented using case studies and slides. Grief and loss are culturally widely misunderstood/underplayed. Because grief is a normal healing process, its interplay with other psychological issues has not been explored except within this specialty field. Nonetheless, grief may endure for a period of years and will impact every aspect of the griever’s life during that time. Grief frequently presents similarly to depression and/or anxiety, and an understanding of the grief process can prevent misdiagnoses and over-pathologization. |
