David Brodzinsky, PhD ~ Web Briefing ~ 1.5 Hrs
Wednesday, October 1, 2008 ~ 11:30am-1:00pm David Brodzinsky, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Developmental and Clinical Psychology and past Director of the Foster Care Counseling Project at Rutgers University. He also was a founding director and served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute in New York City. Currently, he is Research and Project Director for the Institute. For the past three decades, his research and scholarly writing has focused primarily on issues related to the adjustment of adopted and foster children and their families. He is especially well known for his research on developmental and family issues related to adopted children’s adjustment. This Web Briefing focuses on an important aspect of contemporary adoption practice – transracial placements – and specifically on way in which race, ethnicity and culture impact on children’s self-esteem, identity, and emotional adjustment. Issues related to parent preparation and training for racial socialization of children will be examined, particularly in light of conflicting legal and policy regulations governing this process. It will include an introduction to contemporary trends in transracial placements, the regulations governing parent preparation and training in this area, and efforts to change federal regulations which pose barriers to effective parent preparation. Please Note: This Question-and-Answer session is conducted via Telephone Conferencing. Participants are provided with a Access Phone Number, for which they will be charged through their long distance provider. For most long distance plans, this should be very inexpensive. In cases where the long distance charges are a barrier, we encourage the use of Skype or other similar services. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and follow-ups with Dr Spira on the topic of treating post-combat TBI. It is envisioned primarily as a follow-up opportunity for participants in the "Advanced Issues" class, but anyone with questions on this topic is invited to attend. |
