Dr. Philip C. Kendal is recognized both nationally and internationally as an expert in the field of the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders in children . During the course of this full-day workshop, participants will review the diagnosis and assessment of anxiety disorders. Special considerations in youth are highlighted. Research evidence will both illuminate and expand the roles of cognition and behavior, development and family context in the development and maintenance of anxiety. This foundation lays the groundwork for a full extrapolation of the theory and principles that underlie evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral interventions for children with anxiety disorders. Skills and strategies for successful implementations will be discussed. Research outcomes and suggestions for future directions will conclude the workshop. LEARNING OBJECTIVES To improve the identification of anxiety disorders in youth To better understand the nature of anxiety disorders in youth, including developmental, cognitive, and familial forces. To acquire intervention skills for the provision of mental health services for youth suffering from anxiety disorders To gain an understanding of the cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders in youth, including the details of an illustrative empirically-supported program (i.e., the Coping Cat). |
