. . . . . . . .

This workshop focuses on the role of private clinicians -- psychologists, family therapists, and clinical social workers -- in helping the transition of returning Veterans and helping to address their behavioral health needs.

The recent RAND Report on "The Invisible Wounds of War" underscores the paramount importance of community and the private clinical network in the overall continuum of services to assist recovery. However, while appropriate training programs for clinicians and other community stakeholders are just emerging, very little is understood about how the delivery of services can be most effectively accomplished.

Content to be presented in the class includes:

  • The role of community in the healing process, using stories, anecdotes, and research. The RAND Report will serve as a source of information and perspective in this area.
  • A description of appropriate training, identification of competencies required to serve the returning vets population
  • Barriers to receiving mental health services, citing the recent Capella Report and other sources
  • The role of networking with local veterans service organizations
  • The possibility of clinicians working with Vets to help other Vets in a para-clinical capacity
