Dr Joseph Obegi
is a clinical psychologist specializing in addiction and co-occuring disorders. He has lectured in attachment theory and chemical dependency at California School of Professional Psychology, and provided supervision in Counseling and Psychological Services at San Diego State University. His current research interests involve adult romantic attachment, validation of attachment instruments, and assessment of DBT outcomes.

Rationale: A central characteristic of alcohol and substance disorders is Relapse; forty to sixty percent of persons relapse following treatment. Thus, appropriate treatment of these disorders must involve concerted efforts to prevent and manage relapses.

Practical Techniques for Preventing and Managing Relapse is a 4-hour course which reviews
  • the cognitive-behavioral theory of relapse

  • research findings regarding relapse and the efficacy of relapse prevention (RP) treatment

  • therapeutic and pharmacologic strategies for preventing and managing relapses

Resources to direct further learning will also be provided.

Although RP can and is applied to a wide variety of addictive disorders, this course focuses on alcohol and substance disorders
