I. Instructor and Workshop Description

flowersLoma K. Flowers, MD has practiced psychiatry for 40 years in the San Francisco Bay area, publishing on various practical aspects of her work, including dreams, diversity and emotional competence.

Dr. Flowers is a former president of the Northern California Psychiatric Association, a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF (volunteer series.) She has won a number of awards for both teaching and community service. Since 2005, she is the founder and President of Equilibrium Dynamics, (www.EQDynamics.org) a California 501(c)(3) dedicated to teaching the fundamental principles and skills of normal personal and professional development.

This workshop provides an overview of one approach to emotional competence, including its role in determining behavior. It covers basic concepts, principles and dynamics of Emotional Competence, and introduces a toolkit of related skills to integrate into a personal psychotherapeutic orientation as a clinician and into your personal life.

The workshop format includes brief presentational elements as well as guided activities drawn from Dr. Flower's international private practice of preventive psychiatry, consultations to individuals and families, and facilitation of retreats for organizations.

II. Workshop Goals

1) Review the basic principles and concepts of Emotional Competence

2) Demonstrate some common dynamics of those concepts in your own personal or professional development

3) Practice the application of this emotional competence approach to particular clinical situations that you face in your work with clients

4) Identify an area of focus for your own future professional or personal development
