Understanding Health and Illness in Older Adults: Mind/Body Interplay

This course presents information on the psychological complexities of adult development and aging. Content focuses on established psychological theories of adult development and recent research involving social and biological influences on behavior, and cognitive functioning in older adults.

Healthy aging is distinguished from physical and psychological illness in the elderly, with the interplay between the psychological and physical highlighted. Treatment interventions grounded in theory and methodologically sound research are reviewed. Finally, current and predicted future challenges to psychology and mental health relative to the elderly in the United States are addressed.

The Web Lectures for this class provide 10 hours of CE credit, plus an additional one hour is available (optional) from the Q&A session

In addition to providing continuing education credit for licensed psychologists, MFTs and LCSWs, this course fulfills the state board licensing pre-requisite for coursework in aging and long-term care for those who began graduate training on or after January 1, 2004

Joan Calandra, PhD, RN, is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in West Los Angeles. She treats adult patients throughout the lifespan, practicing from a contemporary psychodynamic framework. Additionally, Dr. Calandra works as a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist, providing intervention to patients and family members in acute psychological distress. Dr. Calandra brings over 20 years of diverse mental health experience to the classroom. As an officer in the United States Air Force she functioned as both psychologist and psychiatric nurse. Dr. Calandra has authored a number of health psychology articles for peer reviewed publications.
