Fundamentals of Preschooler Mental Health

Prerequisite or Concurrent Course Requirement: Parent-Child Relationship Assessment

Classes will be offered in Fall 2009

This seminar addresses the theoretical bases of preschooler mental health, integrating normal and atypical preschooler development and relationships with family and peers, with a particular emphasis on the cultural and ecosystemic contexts. Treatment planning is organized around play-based developmental and relationship based assessments within an ecosystemic perspective, including early childhood consultation & ethics. Play-based and systems-based (family & preschool) interventions are emphasized and evidence-supported approaches for preschoolers are introduced, including Child-Parent Psychotherapy, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and TF-CBT. Requires completion of outside reading and assignments, including a non-clinical preschooler-family case study.

This course is approved for 40 hours of play therapy CE through the Association for Play Therapy

This course meets the following criteria developed by the California Infant, Early Childhood & Family Mental Health Workgroup on training standards: California's IPFMHI Training Guidelines
  • 15 hours of Knowledge Domain A (Understanding parenting, & preschooler-parent relationships & families)

  • 19 hours of Knowledge Domain B (Preschooler development, including at least 3 hours of observations)

  • 20 hours of Knowledge Domain F (Basic observation, screening, and intervention skills with preschoolers)

  • 6 hours of Knowledge Domains G/H (Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Ethics)

Sacramento Instructor:
Beth Limberg, PhD, RPT-S is a licensed psychologist, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director of the doctoral clinical psychology program at CSPP/Alliant in Sacramento.

She was Program Services Manager of Building Blocks Early Childhood Intervention Program at the River Oak Center for Children for several years. She is a national trainer on the DC:0-3R for Zero To Three. She presents extensively on early childhood mental health and has published two book chapters on Ecosystemic Play Therapy with young children.

Fresno Instructor:
Daryl Hitchcock, PhD, RPT-S is a licensed psychologist, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and Clinical Director of the Assessment Center for Children ages 0-5 at Exceptional Parents Unlimited, Fresno.

He co-developed and taught the Infant mental health learning lab Curriculum in Fresno County for non-clinician providers and worked as a psychologist with the Infant Mental Health team at Fresno County Mental Health Youth Link. He is a co-developer of the Marschak Interaction Method Rating System (MIMRS) and has published his research in the International Journal of Play Therapy.

San Diego Instructors:
Lily Cosico-Berge, PsyD, ATR-BC, RPT is a licensed psychologist and registered art & play therapist in the San Diego area. She is also a clinical supervisor at East County Outpatient Counseling, an outpatient clinic for children from birth to 21, and a psychological consultant to Head Start.

She has developed and directed early intervention and treatment programs for infants, preschoolers and their families and has worked extensively with high-risk and multicultural populations. She uses an ecosystemic and relationship-based approach in her work, with particular emphasis on integration of diversity issues. She is trained in Incredible Years (IY), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Infant-Parent/Child-Parent Psychotherapy and Trauma Focused CBT.

Los Angeles Instructors:
Mayra Mendez, PhD is a licensed marriage & family therapist with more than 25 years experiences in the fields of Developmental Disabilities and infant mental health.

She is clinical coordinator of the Developmental Disabilities Programs at Saint John’s Child & Family Development Center in Santa Monica where she focuses her work on families with co-existing mental illness. She conducts community-wide trainings & consultation & is a Certified Group Psychotherapist & Certified Marriage & Family Supervisor.

Wendy Sun, PsyD is a licensed psychologist & clinical supervisor with the Early Intervention Division of the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic.

She has been working with the 0-5 population for several years, providing in-home relationship- and play-based services through the First Steps program in South Central Los Angeles. She uses the Floor Time approach in her work, with particular emphasis on addressing the specific needs of multicultural & underserved populations. Her work was recently highlighted in the June, 2008 APA Monitor on Psychology.
