This workshop primarily involves an examination of the conceptual and psychodynamic components of self-deception, as presented in the work, “Self Deception” (Routledge and Kegan Paul, London, 1969) by Herbert Fingarette.  Examination of this important work will help participants gain greater in-sight into how human beings rationalize, justify and/or deceive themselves in terms of a variety of offensive and hurtful behaviors, especially those that are cruel, manipulative, antisocial and criminal

The workshop will also work hard to differentiate self-deception from lying, hypocrisy, minimization, denial, repression, reaction formation, projective identification, dissociation, excuse making, defensiveness and rationalization. By the end of the workshop participants should be able to help clients determine how they have been manipulated, deceived and/or used by other people. This knowledge should also help them gain greater insight into the intrapsychic dynamics behind an offender’s actions and, thus, what is involved in holding that individual accountable. This workshop will also help therapists address self-deceptive dynamics that are manifested in the sessions by their clients.
